Alaska was purchased by the U.S. from Russia in 1867. It became the 49th state on January 3, 1959. Alaska is the largest state in area (twice the size of Texas), but ranks 49th in population.
Alaska has 17 of the 20 highest mountains in the United States including the highest peak in North America - Mount Denali.
